Why to people raise alpacas?

There are several reason why people purchase these beautiful animals.

  1. Investment livestock

  2. Looking for a new kind of pet

  3. As a source of fiber to spin

  4. A different lifestyle

I know several people that make a living raising alpacas by selling their off-spring. These are rare animals and it will be many years before there are sufficient numbers to warrant lower prices. And as with other livestock, quality animals will always retain a higher value. To find out why people purchase investment animals, check out the other links on this web site for tax and investment information or visit the alpacainfo.com site, you can also contact us for the "Financial aspects of Alpaca ownership" brochure.

Alpacas are not expensive pets or at least they don't have to be. Pet quality males sell for around $1,000, not much different than some breeds of dogs and they don't eat as much as a large dog. Look for halter trained, pet therapy type animals. Pet quality animals can also be good starter animals for a farm.

There are many home spinners around and they enjoy raising their fiber animals. You can purchase pet quality/fiber animals, shear them once a year for their fiber and be happy.

You will find that almost all alpaca owners love the lifestyle of owning a small acreage raising alpacas.

For more information, visit farms, web sites or stop by the Homestead. The Homestead also has a market with finished alpaca products, we're open Tuesday - Saturday 12:00pm - 5:00pm. Feel free to stop in and shop or just see the alpacas and learn more about raising these unique animals from South America.

Homestead Alpacas is located in Greeley, Colorado. We raise Suri and Huacaya alpacas of Peruvian and American origin. We'll be glad to talk to you about the various qualities and answer any questions about purchasing, raising and the ranch management.
